Getting started

1) Opening a file.

Click Open and choose a Psychonauts resource file.
This will be one of the following:

PC Version:
.pkg file - contains general game data.
.ppf files - contain the data for each level.
.isb files - contain the music and voices.

XBox version:
.pkg file - contains general game data.
.ppf files - contain the data for each level.
.xwb files - contain the music and voices.

PS2 version:
Resource.pak file - contains all the game data.

The contents of the resource file will now be displayed.

2) Explaining the buttons.

The panel on the right contains a number of buttons:
Open File - Opens a Psychonauts resource file.
Search - Displays the search box (only if a file is open).
Dump File - Raw dumps the currently selected file (the file is just dumped to disk without converting it to a friendly format).
Dump All - Raw dumps every file in the archive.

View: All Files - Displays a list of all the different file types. Choosing one of these file types filters the display so that only the selected file types are shown.
E.g. - Selecting '.dds' from the list would mean that only .dds image files were shown in the main window.

The buttons below this change according to the type of file that is selected. If you filter the view or click on a file the panel changes to display options appropriate for that file.
For example - if you click on a .dds file, a preview of the image will appear and the 'resize', 'resample', 'save image' and 'save all images' buttons will appear.

3) Viewing/Saving Images and Textures

In the Pc and XBox versions of Psychonauts the images are stored in .DDS files.
Click on a .DDS image and the panel on the right will change to display image buttons.

Resize Image - This allows you to choose the degree to which the image is resized when saved.
Resampling Filter - This allows you to choose a smoothing filter, which helps to create a smoother image when resizing.
Save Image - Allows you to save the currently selected image as a JPEG, BMP, PNG or DDS.
Save All Images - Saves every image in the file.

In the PS2 version images are stored in .ps2 files - these are not yet supported.

4) Saving Music/Voices

In the PC version of Psychonauts the audio is stored in .ISB files.
In the XBox version the audio is stored in .XWB files.

Click on an audio file and the panel on the right will change to display audio buttons.
Most of the audio in Psychonauts is compressed and must be converted back into a normal format before it can be listened to. So do not click the 'Dump File' or 'Dump All' buttons if you want to be able to listen to the audio. Instead click one of the following buttons:

Save Audio File - Saves and converts the currently selected file.
Save All Audio Files - Saves and converts every audio file.
